Chakras have been described as distinct energy centers found along the central meridian of the human body. They radiate the vital life energy referred to as Kundalini and/or Chi. It has been commonplace to say there are seven distinct
Chakras. The Kundalini and/or
Chi energy from each of the seven
Chakra centers radiates out to adjoining
Chakras and in turn to the distal parts of various correspondingly "attached" extremities.
Picture it as a spinal column delegating the flow of vital life energy. From this comparison we can also ascertain that just as in a spinal column where any blockages, breaks or ruptures can lead to serious injury if not even paralysis, any impediment of the flow of vital chi energy through the
Chakras would also have negative side effects.
|

|
|
| The bottom line is that each
Chakra must remain activated by being sufficiently stimulated so as to allow the free-flow of Kundalini
(Chi) energy from the base up to the crown and in turn from the crown down to the base. |
|
- Each Chakra has a color associated with it.
- This color corresponds to a range in the spectrum of pure white light.
- Just as all the colors in the spectrum must work together so as to create pure white light, all of the
Chakras in the
Chakra network must work together so as to create a pure radiating energy.
|
| Most
non-TANTRIC meditation techniques work to attune the
Chakras one at a time beginning at the head
Chakra and then from there working on down to the root
Chakra. Tantra could be labeled the Chakra attunement method for the new millennium in that it is a more direct method than the other. By primarily attuning the root
Chakra through
Tantra, you create an upward domino effect and automatically attune all of the other six
Chakras.

CHAKRA #1:
The Root Chakra
(Muladhara): Security Center. The first
Chakra termed the
Root
Chakra is associated with the prostate
or
pelvic
floor
and therefore is located at the base of the spine midway between the anus and the
scrotum
or
vagina. Since this
Chakra is related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of being grounded and connected to our bodies and the physical world it is often seen as that which forms the foundation of our very being. Some men who have had their prostate removed due to cancer feel as if the very ground on which they stand has been ripped from beneath their feet. Then there are those individuals whose other six energy
Chakras have been so well attuned that they work together to establish and maintain this
Root
Chakra despite the absence of the prostate. This can help to explain
why some men who after prostate removal are still able to perform sexually.

#3:
The Solar Plexus Chakra
(Manipura): Power Center. The third
Chakra is known as the power
Chakra. It is located in the solar plexus and rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our
metabolism.
This
Chakra is responsible for that "gut-feeling" we often get when confronted with a situation. Much like a virus wreaking havoc in a computer
network. Not following this gut-feeling could also wreak havoc on our own
Chakra network.
Malfunction

CHAKRA
#4:
The Heart Chakra

Chakra is known as the heart
Chakra. It is located in exactly the spot we place our hand when saying the pledge of allegiance to the American flag. It is related to love and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, male and female, ego and unity. A healthy fourth
Chakra allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, have a deep sense of inner peace peace and centeredness.

CHAKRA
#7:
The Crown Chakra
(Sahasrara): Cosmic Consciousness. The seventh
Chakra relates to consciousness as being pure awareness. It is here that we establish a connection to the greater world beyond, to a timeless, spaceless place of all-knowing. This is where once we've gotten to the big picture through
the
6th
Chakra
that we can see the what we actually were put on this earth for. This
Chakra,
when fully developed, brings us a form of absolute knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection, and true bliss.

* Note: These Chakras are NOT clearly separate and distinct energy centers. They may and often do flow into each other (much like running water colors) because after all they are just another of man's often vain attempts to explain and justify the world upon which he live and his place in it. |

|
History
of Chakras |
|
| The word
"chakra" is Sanskrit for wheel or disk and signifies one of seven basic energy centers in the body. Each of these centers correlates to major nerve ganglia branching forth from the spinal column. In addition the
Chakras also correlate to levels of consciousness, archetypal elements, developmental stages of life, colors, sounds, body functions, and much, much more.
Now that the
Chakras have become New Age parlance, there are many interpretations of their meaning and function being bandied about. While this popularity is making the
Chakras a household word, it is also spreading a lot of confusing, conflicting, and often erroneous information. It is important to realize the
Chakras come from an ancient tradition, which many New Age teachers have barely explored.
The Vedas, which are the oldest written tradition in India, (2,000 - 600 B.C.) were written largely by the Aryans, who were said to have entered India on chariots. The original meaning of the word
Chakra as "wheel" refers to the chariot wheels of the invading Aryans. (The correct spelling is
" cakra", though pronounced with a
ch as in church.) The word was also a metaphor for the sun, which "traverses the world like the triumphant chariot of a
cakravartin" (ruler) and denotes the eternal cycle of time called the
kalacakra, or wheel of time. In this way, it represents celestial order and balance.
There is some mention of the
Chakras as psychic centers of consciousness in the Yoga Upanishads (circa 600A.D.) and later in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (circa 200 B.C.). Patanjali's tradition was largely dualistic, however, stating that nature and spirit were separate, and that the goal of yoga was to rise above nature. |
|
The
Chakras and Kundalini came to be an integral part of yoga philosophy in the non-dual Tantric tradition, which arose in the 7th century, in reaction to the dualist philosophy which preceded it. This tradition advised being in the world rather than separate from it. Tantra is commonly thought of in the West as primarily a sexual tradition, as Tantrism does put sexuality in a sacred context. Yet this is actually only a small part of a broad philosophy which includes many practices of yoga, worship of deities, especially the Hindu goddesses, and integration of the many
polar forces in the universe.
The main text about
Chakras that has come to us in the West is a translation by the Englishman, Arthur Avalon, in his
book, The Serpent Power published in 1919.
These texts: the
Sat-Cakra-Nirupana, written by an Indian pundit in 1577, and the
Padaka-Pancaka, written in the 10th century, contain descriptions of the centers and related practices. There is also another 10th century text, called the
Gorakshashatakam, which gives instructions for meditating on the
Chakras. These texts form the basis of our understanding of
Chakra theory and Kundalini
Yoga today.
In these traditions, there are seven basic
Chakras, and they all exist within the subtle body, overlaying the physical body. Through modern physiology we can see that these seven
Chakras correspond exactly to the seven main nerve ganglia which emanate from the spinal column.
